To enhance governance and service delivery, the Jos South Legislative Arm has concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop titled, “Enhanced Legislative Competence in Bill Drafting and Oversight Function.”
The workshop, which ran from 11th of November to 12th, equipped local lawmakers with advanced skills necessary to draft effective legislation and robustly perform their oversight responsibilities.
In his opening address, the Executive Chairman of Jos South LGA, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, emphasized the critical importance of the training for improving local governance. He expressed appreciation to the State Governor, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for a policy of non-interference in local government affairs, which he stated has been pivotal in igniting development at the grassroots level.
Hon. Silas, who also serves as the Deputy ALGON Chair, noted that the workshop would strengthen the collaborative relationship between the executive and legislative arms for the good of the local government.
Echoing this sentiment, the Leader of the Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. David Chomoshen, described the training as a vital component of ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions. He expressed optimism about the workshop’s positive impact on the council’s work.
A key presentation was delivered by Dr. Bernard Alkali, Chairman of Mikang LGA, who served as a resource person. He addressed the topic, “Building a Purposeful Driven Future: Focus on Cooperative Savings,” highlighting the significant role of cooperative savings in driving local economic growth and development.
Participants at the training widely praised the initiative, describing it as “apt” and timely. They confirmed that the knowledge gained would be crucial for more effective lawmaking and ultimately lead to improved representation for their constituents.
