In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in the region, the Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, has begun the construction of a new TB Collection Center and Children Immunization Hall at the Primary Healthcare Center in Giring.
The initiative marks a transformative step for the facility, which has long struggled with inadequate space, forcing medical staff to operate in cramped conditions that posed risks to both patients and healthcare workers.
For years, the current setup where immunization services and Tuberculosis sample collections are conducted in the same small compartment. The limited space often forces women bringing children for immunization to wait outside, while the same room is used to collect TB samples.
This arrangement has been inconvenient for both patients and medical personnel, sometimes requiring procedures to be done outdoors while routine care continues inside. Hence, the Chairman approved the new dedicated collection center, which would be significantly safer for the community and the staff, while also ensuring much needed privacy for TB patients.
The Officer in Charge of the Primary Healthcare facility, Mrs. Laraba Danjuma, expressed deep appreciation for the Chairman’s prompt response to their complaints. She recalled that he had visited the facility the previous month and witnessed the challenges firsthand, and she praised him for acting immediately on their concerns. She described him as a man of his word, noting that the commencement of the project proves his commitment, and she expressed hope that construction would be completed on schedule.
The community also voiced strong support for the project. The Acting Gwom Giring, Da Francis Mancha, underscored that the importance of the development cannot be overstated, given that Tuberculosis is a communicable disease and that it was extremely hazardous to collect samples in the same small space used for child immunizations. He revealed that the community had already begun mobilizing resources, purchasing blocks and gravel to start construction on their own, but the Chairman’s intervention has made all the difference, as the building is now well underway.
The new facilities are expected to significantly improve the quality of care at the health center, providing a safe, private, and efficient environment for both immunization programs and TB treatment services in the Giring community.
