Berom

The Berom people, the largest indigenous ethnic group in Plateau State, Nigeria, comprise 49% of the state’s population and reside mainly in Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi, and Riyom. They speak the Berom language and celebrate a rich cultural heritage through various festivals that hold social, economic, and political significance.

Nzem Berom, established in 1980, merges several traditional festivals into a single grand celebration in April, promoting unity and cultural pride. It features cultural displays, music, dance, a beauty pageant, and a procession for His Majesty, The Gbong Gwom Jos.

Other notable festivals include:

  • Mandyen: Marks the end of the dry season, welcoming the rains with dancing, marriages, and dispute resolutions. Traditional attire and body art feature prominently.
  • Nshok: A post-harvest festival, giving thanks for a fruitful season and emphasizing agriculture and community rituals.
  • Badu: A bi-annual event for community awareness, problem-solving, and addressing social and economic issues.

These festivals reflect the Berom people’s efforts to preserve and showcase their culture, traditions, and values, offering lessons in unity and cultural identity.
