The Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, today kicked off the long-awaited Jos South 2026 Chairman’s Cup football tournament at a packed Bukuru Stadium, ending an almost ten-year absence of the local competition.
The home team, Gyel A FC, staged a dramatic comeback against Gwol K-Vom United. After the away side forward Emanuel John (No. 11) opened the scoring, Gyel A equalized and later secured victory through a penalty. Sele Lulu (No. 11) and Jerry Choji (No. 9) delivered the winning goals for the home team.
Hon. Silas, who kicked off the match before a lively crowd, emphasized the tournament’s deeper purpose beyond sport.
He explained that reviving the Chairman’s Cup after almost a decade serves two main goals, restoring sports development at the local government level and fostering unity among the area’s diverse ethnic groups.
Reflecting on his own playing days in the mid‑1990s, the Chairman recalled competing in the same tournament and noted that many players were discovered through it.
For the Chairman, football has consistently acted as a unifying force, bringing together people regardless of religion, tribe, or political affiliation. He pointed to the day’s turnout as evidence that the sport transcends divisions.
Also present were Commissioner of Transport Hon. Davou Jatau; Deputy Chairman Ngo Kachollom Lucy Michael; Hon. Hitler Pwajok, former SA on Youth Mobilization; PFA Chairman Prince Yahaya Kwande; the Leader and members of the Seventh Legislative Council; Secretary Hon.
