The draws for the much-anticipated 2026 Chairman’s Cup Football Tournament have been officially concluded, with the Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government Council, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, declaring that the tournament is far more than a sporting event, it is a promise kept and a vehicle for unity, peace, and youth empowerment.
He explained that the tournament fulfils one of their campaign promises, which is to revive sports in the region. His administration decided to start with football, he believes it can help energise the movement and open the door to other sporting activities within the council.
He stressed that the tournament has no political undertone, but rather seeks to foster coexistence among Christians, Muslims, and all who call Jos South home. The unity of the local government is key, he said, which is why his administration continues to invest in anything that fosters unity among the people.
Hon Silas who doubles as the Deputy ALGON Chair, gave a firm charge against importing players from other local government areas. The Chairman appealed directly to coaches and team representatives not to go and import players, insisting that Jos South has many talents they can shop for. He noted that when they showcase their own, others will come calling.
The Executive Chairman expressed his hope that one, two, or three players will be selected from the tournament — whether for local clubs or national ones, or possibly even bigger academies abroad. He stated that this is what the tournament also seeks to achieve.
The tournament’s Planning Committee Chairman and Director of Finance and Supply, Mr. Larry Gowon, elaborated on the rules, any player must be resident in Jos South. Sanctions will apply to any team found fielding a league player or a non-resident.
Gowon explained that the essence of the tournament is for people to have a sense of belonging. He noted that football has no language, so the essence is unity of purpose as it affects the people of Jos South.
He added that despite lean council resources, the Executive Chairman has ensured that all participating teams receive a set of jerseys and two footballs, with the council covering all financial implications of the tournament.
PFA Plateau State Chairman, Mr. Suleiman Kwande, while reiterating the importance of following the rules during the tournament, promised to invite scouts from Plateau United, Mighty Jets, and potentially European academies.
The 2026 Chairman’s Cup is set to begin on Monday, May 25th, and will be played non-stop, with organisers hopeful that winners will emerge at the end of a tournament intended to leave a lasting legacy of peace and opportunity.
