Jos South Local Government Council (LGC) wishes to inform the general public of a severe windstorm that occurred on Tuesday, August 20, 2025.

The storm caused significant damage to Council property. The primary impact was on the main entrance gate, which was partially collapsed by the force of the storm. Sections of the Secretariat’s roof were also affected.

Furthermore, the storm impacted a number of residential buildings directly opposite the secretariat. The communities of Lyoh Tah and parts of Daron were also severely hit, with ten houses and a church building affected.

Immediately after the storm, the Executive Chairman of Jos South LGC, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, conducted a first-hand assessment of the damage to coordinate the emergency response.

He was joined by key officials of the Council, including the Leader of the Jos South Legislative Arm, Hon. Chomoshen Emmanuel, Chief of Staff, Arc. Rwang Lojay, Supervisory Councilors; Directors; and other top officials.

Key Plateau State government officials stopped by, including the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Jatau, and a Member of the Plateau State House of Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Mafeng Gyang.

Following the assessment at the secretariat, the Chairman,  his team and both NEMA and SEMA, who were also on ground, conducted an immediate visit to the affected community opposite the secretariat. The purpose of the visit was to personally commiserate with the residents, assess the extent of damage to their homes, and assure them of government’s intervention.

A bulldozer has since been deployed to the Secretariat and is actively working to safely remove the sections of the damaged gate that are precariously hanging over the security post, ensuring the safety of staff and visitors.

The Executive Chairman, while expressing gratitude that no lives were lost, has assured staff and residents of the Council’s commitment to a swift response.

We urge the public to exercise caution when approaching the secretariat complex and to adhere to all safety directives from security personnel on the ground.

Christy Pam Makut

Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman, Jos South Local Government Council.
